Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire!

Just got my lil’ pile of political mail, included one that was particularly misleading. From Bert Mizusawa, quoting President Obama as saying “Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English…you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.”

(You can see it for yourself right here.)

Nice try Bert.  Or should I say nice lie Bert?

THIS is the quote in it’s entirety:

“I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, we need to have English only. They want to pass a law, we just, we want English only,” Obama told supporters in Powder Springs, Georgia on Tuesday. “Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English, I agree with this. But understand this, instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English, they’ll learn English, you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.”

“You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual,” he said. “We should have every child speaking more than one language. It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beacoup, right?”

“Everybody is going to learn to speak English if they live in this country. The issue is not whether or not future generations of immigrants are going to learn English. The question is how can we come up with both a legal, sensible immigration policy.”

Sit and spin on that Bert, you shady, disingenuous lying sack of shit.

If you’d like to educate yourself on the matter some more Bertster, after having removed your head from your ass, you can view the President’s ACTUAL track record on immigration as opposed to this fairy tale your spinning in the imaginary world you live in.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the Presidents sentiments here.  He acknowledges a need for the immigrants to learn the language, states that he feels they will learn the language (because contrary to what you xenophobic hicks think they more often than not do) and points out that our children are quite deficient in learning additional languages.

Hell, you would think Rand Paul and the rest of the uber-Libertarian/Tea Party types would embrace this concept.  Their ENTIRE platform is based on personal accountability to the point where they don’t want the government telling anybody how to do anything.

Even taken out of context it fits their philosophy to a tee.

Obviously taken in proper context it makes even more sense.  They need to learn English.  They will learn English.   I believe that, the President has openly voiced this again and again, though if the Bert Mizusawa’s of the world have their way they will conveniently “delete” that anytime the issue comes up, and it has no place in a serious debate about immigration.

Maybe it makes you feel better inside somehow, but it isn’t the answer to the problem.  It isn’t even worth mentioning until the important parts of the issue are resolved.

Keep your eye on the damn ball Bert.

    • Distorted. I like that. Always the refuge of the dishonest. You take a mans words, omit entire segments of it to completely alter the context of what he said and it isn’t a lie huh? Nice try.

I didn’t omit a single thing Bertster said did I? All I did was report the deception, showing you what the prospective Congressmen said versus the actual quote. But somehow that is distorting? Seems like your one of Bert’s immigrants who doesn’t grasp the English language to me because that is in no way distorting.

But sure, go the GOP route and blame the media/bearer of the news. That seems to work enough times to justify using it here. Now go drink your “kool aid” and tune in so Uncle Rush can tell you what to think!

    • The flipside of it? I can, it is addresses and donation instructions but I can do that for you. The rhetoric side is linked in the piece.

  1. I don’t see a “lie” in the quote from Mr. Mizusawa, but understand your view that it could be seen as incomplete or, if you prefer, argued to be a distortion. Looking it all over, I’m not sure.

What this “conversation” seems to miss is that President Obama, who I generally like, was mixing solutions and problems – while the solution to enhanced American international standing could be supported by fluency in more than English, the solution to illegal immigrants of limited English proficiency is hardly in parents worrying about their American children learning to speak Spanish. Some states have established requirements for bi-lingual education and those are seen to stretch further the already-scarce education dollars, thereby eroding the education of all more than it benefits the few.

I’m generally against solving the wrong problem, and always against uncivil dialogue (you should drop the vitriol and bring more light to the discussion). Prattle like “xenophobic hicks,” “sack of shi*” and similar do little to convince folks.

BTW, I googled Mizusawa and learned he was 1st in his class at West Point, JFK School of Government and Harvard Law … even more impressive was a Silver Star for real heroism … so were I picking someone to call names, I’d likely save them for someone else. He might have presented it more in context, but I’m not convinced either way – especially given the brevity of such targeted communications.

For the record, I’ve voted Dem/Rep/Indep and think both of the main Parties tend to be out of touch with the great mass in the middle.

    • His pedigree to me only makes it worse. Distortions, half-truths and lies (and to me if you take a speech, omit entire parts of that to alter the context of what was said that is a lie) are heartbreaking when coming from someone I expect to be better than “politics as usual”. I am a veteran, though not as decorated as Bert, and expect much more from him. Much, much more. Maybe that is naive of me, but if your trying to play the “honor, integrity card” then you have to take the high-road in some cases.

And yes, this was a case of the President mixing and combining issues. But none of that changes the fact the the flyer took a statement where the President agreed with an issue, then went on to talk about other things, only to have those words twisted to appear that he dismissed the concern and then took a sideswipe shot at those concerned.

Give me five minutes and some transcripts from Bert and I can hack and slash creatively to have him admitting to be a jaywalking, cross-dressing member of the taliban.

  2. Not sure I agree fully, but I do see your point on complete context. I still think if a politician mixes solutions and problems it’s fair to call them on it. It would have been more intellectually complete (you’d say honest) with that context.

As for the 5 min. hack and slash, I found something that might present a challenge to the claim. Check out this gem: http://www.homeofheroes.com/members/04_SS/6_PostRVN/06_korea.html
… and then reflect on the general context you appear to place Mr. Mizusawa after seeing the item and drawing whoesale conclusions about him that appear inappropriate: the charged title, the inflammatory words, the generalizations. It seems to lack context of the sort you expect from him. The more I look, I think you (and we) are right to expect more from him.

    MIZUSAWA, BERT K.
    Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Bert K. Mizusawa, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for exceptional valor and gallantry in action while serving as Commander of the Joint Security Force Company, United Nations Command Security Force at Panmunjom, Korea, on 23 November 1984. In reaction to thirty attacking North Korean soldiers in pursuit of a Soviet defector, Captain Mizusawa’s outstanding leadership and aggressive actions in leading his company while under fire were instrumental in defeating the enemy and ensuring the safety of the defector and other personnel in the United Nations Command sector of the Joint Security Area. He was responsible for providing sustained suppressive fires and stopping the enemy force with an M-203. Throughout the intense firefight, Captain Mizusawa displayed a complete disregard for his own personal safety while accomplishing his mission. Captain Mizusawa’s bravery and outstanding leadership under extremely hazardous circumstances are in keeping with the finest traditions of military heroism and reflect great credit upon him, the United Nations Command and the United States Army.

[On a humorous note, if you can mount an attack of the sort you claimed, you might offer your services to the North Koreans – looks like they came up short.]

Anyway, I get your point about context and it cuts both ways. Good luck with the blog. Keep it honest and in context! By the way, thanks for your service as a veteran.

Back to real work. Good luck with the blog.

  3. Well, it appears to me that Bert did what all politicians do, take something dumb somebody else says (Obama does that alot, and Biden more so). You are the actual piece of shit though, attacking somebody you have probably never met, talked with, or even had the balls to even attempt to accomplish what he has.

At least it is nice to see the delusional ranting of the foaming mad liberal is alive and well.

    • You amuse me. Yes Bert did what every politician does. After playing the “I am not a politician, I am a man of honor” card again & again. And I have a. talked to him, b. done what he did (served in the United States Army) so nice try assclown =)
