The Lie That Just Won’t Die

You know.  I try and sit back and picture things from the “other side”.  I really do.  But when “mainstream” candidates like Mike Huckabee, who leads pretty much every poll you will find of the prospective GOP nominees for 2012, run around and actively perpetuate this lie, this absolute untruth about our President, our Commander-In-Chief it becomes increasingly harder to do.

This latest foray into insanity came when radio host Steve Malzberg asked the former Arkansas governor to weigh in on the “birther” debate. Huckabee sidestepped, saying: “I would love to know more, but what I know is troubling enough. And one thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example is very different than the average American.”

Huckabee later stated that Obama’s perspective was shaped by “growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather.” Listen to the complete audio here.

After the interview made the national news Tuesday, Huckabee’s team told ABC News that the governor simply misspoke and meant Indonesia, not Kenya. “Governor Huckabee simply misspoke when he alluded to President Obama growing up in ‘Kenya.’ The Governor meant to say the President grew up in Indonesia,” Huckabee’s political action committee director Hogan Gidley told ABC.

The problem is Kenya was under British rule, while Indonesia was under Dutch control.

He also referenced a rebellion that occurred in Kenya, not Indonesia.

So if we are to believe your version of the events Huckster, it just means you doubled down on your level of stupidity and got MULTIPLE things wrong.

Look, I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  But I also believe whole-heartedly that you’re not entitled to your own set of facts in doing so.

I also am aware that, sadly, there is much misinformation and controversy surround the president’s birth and childhood.

The president’s father was Kenyan, but met Obama’s mother in Hawaii where Obama was born. President Obama did spend a portion of his childhood in Indonesia before returning to Hawaii. Obama first visited Kenya as an adult.

“Birthers,” those who believe Obama is not a natural-born citizen, continue to drive conspiracy theories about the president’s nationality.

Their foundation for the argument is about as stable and grounded in reality as Charlie Sheen’s mental state.

It all falls down on one relative’s account of having witnessed his birth in Kenya.  They pay zero heed to the fact that there were multiple announcements in area newspapers, that the last Governor of Hawaii, a Republican, has publicly verified both his birth certificate’s  existence and authenticity.

This is somewhat understandable since we have assclowns like one Mike Evans.  This jackass appeared on Minnesota’s KQRS to announce that he’d been told by Hawaii governor Neil Abercrombie that Barack Obama’s original birth certificate was nowhere to be found.

This is what he told KQRS on January 20:

“Yesterday, talking to Neil’s office, Neil says that he searched everywhere using his powers as governor ….. there is no Barack Obama birth certificate in Hawaii. Absolutely no proof at all that he was born in Hawaii.”

Strange thing then that a few days later, Abercrombie, who apparently knew Barack Obama, Sr. and Ann Dunham when they were raising Obama, said the state had evidence of Obama’s birth.

“It was actually written, I am told,” said Abercrombie, “this is what our investigation is showing, it actually exists in the archives, written down.”

Now, much later later, Evans is claiming that he misspoke.

Hrm, that word again.  How come when it comes to this all of the ones perpetuating the myth ALL seem to “misspeak”?

Evans told FoxNews.com on Wednesday he was remorseful and embarrassed about the incident.

“I was on 34 radio stations that morning….instead of saying ‘the hospital said there’s no birth certificate’ I misspoke and said Neil said that,” said Evans.

Then he made the exact opposite claim.

“Only this I can you tell you is 100 percent fact: that Neil never told me there was no birth certificate,” Evans said. “I never talked to him.” In fact — Evans is saying that he hasn’t spoken to Abercrombie since he’s been governor.

How quickly facts change!

But the reason why Evan’s defense that he misspoke because he had been on “34 interviews” that morning seems so weak is that he went on to tell FoxNews.com that he first heard of the whole missing birth certificate story by reading an online article on January 18th with the headline “Hawaii governor can’t find Obama’s birth certificate.” The article apparently said neither the hospital nor Abercrombie could find the certificate.

It sounds like Evans was just claiming things he read online to be facts he had researched himself.

What a professional journalist we have here huh?

Even with these sort of “half-hearted” retractions the damage is done.  Conservative bloggers and radio talk show hosts seized on this one and ran with it night & day.

Even Fox News got in regurgitating this as if it was the gospel.

Just a few days later we were reminded of how much this disinformation campaign has sunk into the psyche of the electorate when a group of 20 GOP primary voters in Iowa had twelve panel members claim that they believed President Obama was NOT a citizen of the United States.

But I also REFUSE to write this off as a large number of Republican voters, a recent study shows 51% agree with the “birthers”, just being “duped” by bad reporting.

At some point a level of personal accountability has to come into play.

I question what lies at the heart of this all.

Why are so many people allowing themselves to be persuaded by an argument with such little factual merit?

Why does it all come down the father, the parent that he met on one occasion at the age of ten?

How is it that we keep hearing about how much his “view of the west”, as if he wasn’t born here and didn’t grow up here, were influenced by his relationship with his paternal grandfather, a man he NEVER met?

Why is that we never want to talk about the woman who raised President Obama?  You know, the white parent.

She was an anthropologist and by nature had more of a “global world view”.  If you have ever met one, you know what I mean when I say this.

This philosophy is based on the core principle that to better one’s self one must draw upon a variety of scientific, cultural and philosophical disciplines.

This is THE underlying principle of President Obama’s belief system.

Hell, it is MY underlying belief system.

The more you know, the more you are exposed to, the better off you are when it comes to making intelligent, informed decisions.

Oh the humanity!  How dare he be so radical!

How come no one ever talks about his grandparents, who play a major part in his life, raising him for a large portion of it?

We never talk about his grandfather Stanley Dunham, a man who served in WWII.

Why are some of us so quick to assume that the insane is in truth reality?

Is it really believable that he is some sort of “Manchurian Candidate”, a muslim sleeper agent sent here over four decades ago to wreak havoc on our beloved nation?

That this is “all part of the plan….muhahahahahaha”?

I don’t think so.  In fact, I know that is not the thought of any sane, intelligent person

Disagree with his ideology.

Disagree with his politics.

But stop disparaging the man through lies.

Bold. Faced. Lies.

He was born here.  He did great in high school.

He went on to some of the best universities we have to offer, excelling along the way (unlike a certain “c” student who held the office before him).

He could have gone into the business world and done just about anything he set his capable mind to, amassing an immense fortune along the way.

But he went back home to Chicago and carved out a life as a community activist, helping some of those who needed a little assistance to get by.

That’s more than I have done for others.

Odds are that is more than you have done.

And politics aside it has earned the man the right to not be called a traitor, and make no mistake that is what you are saying if you buy into this misguided notion, at the end of the day.
