This is what we’ve come to?
A song that’s nearly 40 years old is suddenly considered racist because someone feels threatened by it as a bar band plays it as they walk by the pub?
And go ahead and laugh at the folks in the UK my fellow Americans, but also pray this isn’t the direction we are heading as well and soon.
Here’s more from the BBC:
Simon Ledger, of the Isle of Wight said he was singing the 1970s hit at the Driftwood bar, Sandown, on Sunday when a man of Chinese origin took offence. Police said the passer-by claimed he was then “subjected to racial abuse”.
But, Mr Ledger, 34, of Shanklin, was told by police on Wednesday he would face no further action. He had been placed on “street bail” and voluntarily attended Newport police station earlier in the day. The incident had involved a 32-year-old man who apparently took offence as he walked past the bar during Mr Ledger’s performance.
Hampshire Police said Mr Ledger was questioned on suspicion of causing harassment, alarm or distress, but released because there was not enough evidence to prove a criminal offence had been committed. However, a spokesman said “Anyone who perceives they are the victim of a racially aggravated crime is entitled to make a report to the police.”
Now, “Kung Fu Fighting” annoys the hell out of me. Seriously, I cringe every damn time I hear the thing. I certainly wish that the thing was illegal to perform, but not because it’s racist. It’s just a terrible ass song.
Over the years, I’ve made a habit of lampooning the lunacy of modern policing and political correctness gone awry.
But this case takes the crispy pancake, even though there has been plenty of competition from all points of the compass these days.
As for the individual who filed the charges, all I have to say is…
What on earth is WONG with you?
Okay. Okay. That was bad of me, but I just can’t bring myself to care about that fact after having read this story.
